Welcome to the Middle School Program at Sunway International School!

The Middle school Program at SIS is the stepping stone for students on their path towards exceptional educational achievement. Students will spend their time in middle school focusing on improving and mastering the skills and knowledge required for them to transition smoothly into secondary school. In grades 6, 7, and 8, your child will explore the 4 Core subjects of Mathematics, English, The Arts and Social Studies, all taught by their homeroom teacher. In addition to their Core subjects, students will be exposed to several rotary subjects including French, Bahasa Malaysia, Science, and Physical Education and Health. Having said this, the uniqueness of the SIS Middle School Program that sets it apart from all other intermediate international school programs is the Ontario Curriculum.

The strength of the Ontario curriculum is the emphasis that it places on continual assessment. Assessment in the middle school program is an ongoing process in which daily observation, conversations, and products are assessed by teachers to evaluate student learning. These assessments allow us to provide students with feedback on how to improve (we call this assessment for learning), allow students to assess themselves and their peers so that they know in which direction they need to move towards (assessment as learning) and prepare them for timely summative assessments (assessment of learning). Through the strategic use of these three types of assessment, students are taught how to learn, not solely what to learn. Furthermore, the evaluation of students is broken down into 4 categories: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking & Inquiry processes, Communication, and Application. This ensures that students attain holistic learning of content and skills that they are able to use outside of the school setting thus preparing them for the rigors of high school and beyond.

The SIS Middle School Program’s success to date relies on the strength of the teachers involved in its daily cycle. Core and rotary teachers prioritize communication about student achievement and areas of improvement in order to specially tailor a student’s learning through what we call differentiated instruction.  However, academics are not the only area of expertise that our Middle School faculty possess. Co-curricular programming at SIS ranges from traditional academic-based clubs such as debate and math club to sports and personal interest-based clubs such as futsal, and photography.  The Middle School program also has its separate Student Council that is extremely active in providing students with fun-filled student planned activities.

SIS demonstrates its commitment to a well-rounded student through its membership in the prestigious International Schools Athletic Council (ISAC). Participating in inter-school competitive sports is an opportunity to interact and develop friendships with students from other international schools.

Another method that SIS contributes to a holistic student is our virtue of the month program.  Examples such as Empathy, Forgiveness, and Perseverance help students develop a humanistic and global view of the world. The exploration of these virtues is done with specially designed activities that fortify student growth.  This encourages students to reflect on how they can strive for excellence through the development of carefully chosen character traits.

Within my time at SIS, I have had the pleasure to witness students mature, grow, pursue their passions, challenge themselves, and overcome their weaknesses. They have shown dedication and curiosity in their education and learning. I have no doubts that the success that the middle school program has seen in the past will continue as we end 2018 and welcome 2019! With it’s unique, world-class curriculum, innovative and engaging staff, and a great variety of co-curricular opportunities, the SIS middle school program is proud to be offering your child unparalleled advantages in their educational and personal growth. I am very excited to begin another successful year in the middle school program. I welcome all of our new students to SIS and welcome back all of our previous students for another exciting year!
