The Middle School year-long programme focuses on making a smooth transition from elementary to secondary school. The programme balances academic rigour with a strong emphasis on literacy, numeracy and learning skills. Grades 7 and 8 students are exposed to fun and fruitful learning through a student-centred learning process.

Students participate actively in class and explore issues and ideas with confidence. The programme prepares students to progress confidently into high school.

Message By Middle School Facilitator

Welcome to the Middle School Programme at Sunway International School!

The SIS Middle School Program is the stepping stone for students on their path towards exceptional educational achievement.  In grades 7 & 8, your child will explore the 4 core subjects of Math, English, The Arts, and Social Studies, which are taught by their homeroom teacher.  In addition, students will discover the riches within the rotary subjects of Physical and Health Education, French, Bahasa Malaysia, and Science.  The uniqueness of the SIS Middle School Program that sets it apart from all other intermediate international school programs is the Ontario Curriculum.

The strength of the Ontario curriculum is the emphasis it places on continual assessment.  Assessment in the Middle School program is an ongoing process in which daily observation and evaluation of learning skills and content occurs in order to give students feedback (Assessment for Learning) and prepare them for timely summative assessments (Assessment of Learning).  Students also reflect on their learning in order to know how, or what, to improve; learning to know what they must achieve and how they can achieve this (Assessment as Learning).  Through the strategic use of these three types of assessment students are taught how to learn, not solely what to learn.  Furthermore, evaluation of students is broken down into 4 categories: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking & Inquiry processes, Communication, and Application.  This ensures that students attain a holistic learning of content and skills that they are able to use outside of the school setting thus preparing them for the rigors of high school and beyond.

The SIS Middle School Program’s success to date relies on the strength of the teachers involved in its daily cycle.  Core and rotary teachers communicate the student’s achievements & areas of needed improvement to one another in order to specially tailor student centred learning through differentiated instruction.  However, academics is not the only area of expertise that our Middle School faculty possess.  Co-curricular programming at SIS ranges from traditional academic based clubs such as debate and math club to sports and personal interest based clubs such as futsal, and photography.  The Middle School program also has its separate Student Council that is extremely active providing students with fun-filled student planned activities.

SIS demonstrates its commitment to a well-rounded student through its membership in the prestigious International Schools Athletic Council (ISAC). Participating in interschool competitive sports is an opportunity to interact and develop friendships with students from other international schools that your child will unfortunately be without at many other educational institutions.

Another method that SIS contributes to a holistic student is our virtue of the month program.  Examples such as Empathy, Forgiveness, and Perseverance help students develop a humanistic and global view of the world. The exploration of these virtues is done with specially designed activities which fortify student growth.  This encourages students to reflect on how they can strive for excellence through the development of carefully chosen character traits.

Within my time at SIS, I have had the pleasure to witness students mature, and develop at rapid speed.  The students embody courage, dedication, and curiosity in their educational pursuits.  I am excited to begin another year of the SIS Middle School Program and my first as Middle School Facilitator.  The pride and confidence I have in the SIS Middle School program is a reflection of the success we have had in the past and will, without doubt, continue with this year.  With its unique, world class curriculum, innovative & highly skilled staff, and a plethora of co-curricular opportunities the SIS Middle School Program stands above the clouds in offering your child unparalleled advantages in their educational and personal growth.  We at SIS look forward to hearing from you and teaching your child.
