Welcome to the Middle School Program at Sunway International School!

The Middle School Program at SIS is the stepping stone for students on their path towards exceptional educational achievement. Students will spend their time in Middle School focusing on improving and mastering the skills and knowledge required for them to transition smoothly into Secondary School. In Grades 6, 7, and 8, students will explore the four Core subjects of Mathematics, English, The Arts, and Social Studies, all taught by their homeroom teacher. In addition to their Core subjects, students will be exposed to several rotary subjects including French, Bahasa Malaysia, Science, Health and Physical Education. Having said this, the uniqueness of the SIS Middle School Program that sets it apart from all other intermediate international school programs is the Ontario curriculum.

The strength of the Ontario curriculum is the emphasis that it places on continual assessment. Assessment in the Middle School Program is an ongoing process in which observations, conversations, and products are assessed by teachers to evaluate student learning. These assessments allow educators to provide students with feedback on how to improve (we call this assessment for learning), allow students to assess themselves and their peers so that they know in which direction they need to move towards (assessment as learning), and prepares them for timely summative assessments (assessment of learning). Through the strategic use of these three types of assessments, students are taught how to learn, not solely what to learn. Furthermore, the evaluation of students is broken down into 4 categories: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking & Inquiry processes, Communication, and Application. This ensures that students attain thorough learning of content and skills that they are able to use outside of the school setting, thus preparing them for the rigors of Secondary School and beyond.

The success of the Middle School Program is rooted in the strength of the teachers that contribute to creating our dynamic school community. Core and rotary teachers prioritize communication about student achievement and areas of improvement in order to tailor student learning through differentiated instruction.  However, academics are not the only area of expertise that our Middle School faculty possess. Co-curricular programming at SIS ranges from traditional academic-based clubs such as debate and math club to sports and personal interest-based clubs such as futsal, and photography.  The Middle School program also has its separate Student Council that is extremely active in providing students with fun-filled student planned activities and events.

SIS demonstrates its commitment to a well-rounded student through its membership in the prestigious International Schools Athletic Council (ISAC). Participating in inter-school competitive sports is an opportunity to interact and develop friendships with students from other international schools. The Middle School Intramural Sports League provides all students with the opportunity to be active with friends and experience healthy competition.

As a teacher in Middle School, I am always impressed, proud, and energized by the students that make up our classrooms. Every year, the students in our community go above and beyond to demonstrate their passion for learning about the world around them. From unique Science Fair projects, to student-led projects and presentations, our Middle School students never cease to impress. Beyond their academics, it is their kindness, inclusivity, open-mindedness, and resilience that makes each and every one of our Middle School students truly exceptional. Undoubtedly, this will continue to be the case for years to come.

Sincerely,
